Akut koroner sendrom (AKS), dünya çapında en sık görülen kardiyovasküler hastalıklardan biridir. Akut koroner sendromun birçok nedeni olabilir, ancak patofizyolojiler genellikle benzerdir. Klinikte AKS'yi izlerken kardiyak troponinler ve miyoglobin gibi laboratuvar bulguları önemlidir. Akut koroner sendroma yol açabilen ve hastalığın seyrini değiştirebilen değiştirilebilir risk faktörleri ve yaşam tarzı önemlidir. Diyet yağ asidi örüntüsü, sigara, alkol kullanımı ve fiziksel aktivite en önemli değiştirilebilir risk faktörleri arasındadır. Diyet yağ asidi içeriğinin, orta düzeyde fiziksel aktivitenin AKS'ye karşı koruyucu ve tedavi edici olabileceği belirtilmektedir. Bir diğer önemli konu ise obezite ve AKS arasındaki ilişkidir. Büyük örneklemli birçok çalışma, obezitenin akut koroner sendromda U şeklinde ölüme neden olduğunu göstermiştir. Orta düzeyde obezitenin AKS'de ölüm riskini azalttığı gösterilmiştir.
